Left and right brain strategies for learning

There are various study techniques and strategies that you can apply depending on your dominant side.

The right brain is considered holistic while the left brain analytical and linear. Left brained individuals prefer to learn with specific details while right brained individuals prefer to be presented with the big picture and then discover the details. Right brained individuals would benefit from reading an outline of the material that they are about to learn. It would be helpful for them to make a quick review before the lecture, for example by reading the introduction of the book and the chapters to be covered.

Right brained individuals are more intuitive while left brained individuals are more logical. Right brained individuals are more skilled at sensing when an answer is right even when they cannot prove why it is correct. They can make sense of information that is not immediately apparent and therefore are better at instinctively arriving at correct answers. Left brained individuals should trust their intuition more when they are not sure about an answer, for example in a multiple choice question they should go with their first choice.

The left side of the brain is better at memorizing words and formulas. Right brained individuals prefer concrete and real objects that they can touch and see. They are more visual and may benefit from visualization and mnemonic techniques that would help them remember words and numbers.

Left brained individuals like to complete tasks in a specific order while right brained individuals are more random and lack organization. Right brained individuals would benefit from keeping a schedule and focusing on time management. They should concentrate on pressing issues and delay tasks that can be completed later.

There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. How to Tell if You Have Work-Life Balance

On first impression, this post might have a stupid headline. Whether you have achieved work-life balance doesn’t seem like such a difficult question — all the people you need to consult are nearby, all the necessary data is at hand and there isn’t any fancy math involved in reaching a decision. But as Pamela Slim, blogger and author of Escape from Cubicle Nation, recently pointed out, in the midst of the whirlwind of modern life it can be difficult to separate occasional exhaustion and normal anxieties from real warning signs that your work-life balance is out of whack.

If you want to know how you’re really doing, Slim suggests you stop comparing your life to some mythical state of perfect balance (or your co-workers or friends). Instead, try pondering the following questions:

• Do I enjoy my life while I am living it? When you step outside in the morning, do you take a deep breath and marvel at the wonder that the sun keeps coming up each day? Do you watch your kids (or pets!) intently and notice how perfect they are in their own quirky way? If you hate most of what you are doing most of the time, and miss the beauty of a full moon or the smile of a stranger because you are so busy rushing around, you may want to slow down and pay attention.

• Do I have a very short list of people I make a priority, without exception? The more our friend count stacks up on social media sites, and the more our client base grows, the harder it becomes to give sustained, quality support to those in your network. Emails linger in the inbox, and @ replies go unanswered on Twitter. But some relationships need to be nurtured every day, without exception.

• Do I “stay on my own yoga mat” as yoginis say, and not compare myself to others who are smarter, more productive, more witty, more sexy and more funny? I am lucky enough to hang out with some pretty smart and accomplished people. At times, their level of productivity overwhelms me. They negotiate great book deals, furiously write blog posts, close new business deals, and make time to eat right and work out. When I have a moment of compare and despair, as my friend Martha Beck says, I immediately step back and revisit my own vision of success.

• Do I wield a “No Axe” with great gusto, cutting unenergizing, unprofitable and unstrategic activities from my calendar? Charlie Gilkey wrote a great post explaining the criteria of Opportunity, Visibility and Cash Flow. If your daily activities do not fall into these three areas (including nurturing critical relationships), it is time to raise your no axe and whack them off.

• Are things a bit better today than they were yesterday? I have a lot of big personal and work development projects: a healthier and more fit body, a new book, a new body of speaking work… The big list is overwhelming. But each day, I take a small step toward completing it.

Prince II NRD Registration

Today is the 14th day Prince II join our family. So, I went to NRD this morning to register Prince II birth certificate and MYKID as required. We are given 14 days from birth to register.

So we are no choice, I have to settle it by today ... If not, I will kena fine ... :(

It took me about 2.15 hours to register Prince II birth certification and MYKID as I reached at 8.30 am this morning and already 41st (1041) in the queue for new registration which exclude the MYKAD/MYKID collection. Timing not good !!!

Hopefully, NRD will not be so crowded when its time to collect my Prince II MYKID next month.

I really love the Fish A Fish game in facebook. It really test your ability to aim (accuracy), response (reflex), good memory (given a very short time period) and also patients before you catch a fish. You can view various type of fishes in my aquariums in Fish a Fish ....

Btw, I am at level 19 and aiming for level 20. Level 20 reward is a new aquarium which I plan to house the Piranha... hehe ...

Prince I also play Fish a Fish and reach at level 4 and he really play it by himself. Keep it going, Prince I !!! His mum also not bad, reach at level 11 now. Come and catch me ... hehe ...

Water Play at TTDI Park

This morning, I have promised to my Prince I that I will bring him to TTDI park for water play. Thus, we went for breakfast with his "Poh Poh" first before we heading to TTDI park.

When we reached there and saw so many cars and have to look for parking space. It is really surprise me that TTDI park is so crowded and most of people are jogging and picnic with their family in second day of Hari Raya. The children are so happy with playing the water, sand and catching fishes at the stream.

Prince I really can't wait and straight away jumping into the stream to play water. He is so excited and happy as he had waited so long.

Flashback of NetApp ASEAN Summit 2008. I have attended the NetApp ASEAN Summit 2008 (Sept 2008) in Indigo Pearl at Phuket, Thailand (near Phuket airport). There is full 3 days and 2 night event. NetApp has arranged various activities such as product & services latest updates which covers Sales and Technical.

Indigo Pearl Resort is away from Patong beach about 1.30 hour. There are no entertainment or shopping center near Indigo Pearl Resort. So, we have no choice to rent a car or van to Patong beach after dinner and back to resort in the morning (around 2-3 am). Somehow, we need to wake up early as the seminar will start at 8 am.

Indigo Pearl Resort formerly was a tin mine village and most of the decoration base on tin mine machine and products. The feels are excellent in Indigo Pearl Resort which are very relaxing and have a nice view. Best place to relax and have a enjoyable retreat. :)

What's one positive outcome of the recession? It's leading people to consider a career change. Though the process of figuring out what to do next can be overwhelming, it's also empowering. Taking stock of one's skills, strengths, interests and experience makes an individual realize how much he or she knows and has to offer. Investigating career options also helps employed professionals extricate themselves from dead-end jobs. For people who are unemployed, a layoff can be the catalyst for pursuing a professional dream. Considering alternatives to the work you're currently doing or you've done in the past is a worthwhile exercise for anyone, at any point in a career. Despite what the unemployment rate may lead you to believe, there are always options.

Yet those options may make career change difficult. Figuring out what path to pursue and where to focus your limited time and energy can be daunting. As a result, professionals sometimes go about career change in a scatter-shot way that squanders time and energy. To help you focus, career experts offer some realistic advice for pursuing a career change.

1. Don't rush to go back to school. Many people decide to enter academia after they've been laid off because going back to school is socially acceptable, says Martha Manglesdorf, author of Strategies for Successful Career Change (Ten Speed Press 2009.) "It's easy to rush the decision to go back to school because it feels like you're making progress," she says.

The danger is wasting your time and money on a degree that you end up not using, which happens often enough, says Mangelsdorf. She recommends talking to people with the degree you're thinking of pursuing, to find out what's involved, how they're applying it, and whether it's right for you.

2. Figure out what you want to do. Kim Batson, a certified career management and leadership coach, asks her clients a variety of questions to help them zero in on their next career moves: What do you really want to do? What have you always dreamed of doing? What's motivating you to consider a career change? Is there an industry or group of people you'd like to serve? What are your strengths and skills, and how—and where—else might you use them?

3. Find out what the work is like. If you have an idea of the work you'd like to do, test your theory that it's right for you, says Carl Wellenstein, a career coach and author of 12 Steps to a New Career (Career Press 2009.) Do research on the field or profession that interests you. Find people who are working in the profession you're considering and talk to them, says Wellenstein. You might even be able to shadow them on the job. Look into signing up for a program like VocationVacations, which allows you to "test-drive" your dream job by working in it for a one- to three days.

4. Don't assume that pursuing your passion will lead to riches. The idea that following your dream will lead to financial liberation is a misconception, says Mangelsdorf. When she interviewed people for her book on career change, she says she didn't see a correlation between people's passion and their financial success. "If you're thinking about a career change because you have a dream you really want to pursue, do some homework first to make sure that the economic opportunities are o.k. with you," she says.

5. Realize that any kind of career change takes time. "A career change can take significant thought, motivation, time, money, support and perseverance," says Batson. "It is harder to achieve than searching for a job in the same function, even in a recession."

That's why it's important for people pursuing a career change to be patient with themselves and with the process, and to persevere when they hit roadblocks or dead-ends. And if you have any inkling that your job may not be secure or that you just want to try something different, start the process now, because you may not have the luxury of time later if you do get laid off and find yourself under financial pressure to take another job. An easy way to start the career change process: start following people on Twitter who work in the fields that interest you.

6. Consider small changes. If a wholesale change in your career seems too risky, consider smaller shifts you could make, says Mangelsdorf. For example, if you're employed, are there projects you could take on that would help you transition into a new role?

"Organizations that have had to downsize are having their remaining workers take on more roles," notes Mangelsdorf. "If you're currently employed, that could be an opportunity for you to take on work that will bring you closer to your long-term career goal."

A series of small changes during a longer period of time can lead you to the more dramatic change you ultimately desire. "Career change is often a gradual process," says Mangelsdorf.

7. Don't dwell about losing a job you loved. You may feel forced into a career change if you lost a job you loved through a layoff and you know your odds of finding a job in your field are slim (e.g. you're in a specialized area of IT that's being outsourced to a developing nation.) As hard is it is to let go of things we love, it's important to realize that something better can come along. Says Mangelsdorf: "Keep in mind that if you've had success in one field and been happy in that work, that's a good thing. It means you can find another field where you'll be happy."
